New Generation

Remember what the music industry was like back in the late 70s? Of course you don't, you weren't even born yet (I refuse to believe that anyone who was young in that era is reading an online magazine, let alone one like ours), but that's why you've got all the classic bands still making the occasional appearance on classic rock radio waves. Apparently hearing "More Than A Feeling" at least once a week on the radio wasn't enough for these Brazilian dudes in Auras judging by their debut album "New Generation". I guess the title is meant to be taken literally, that these guys are the new generation of the 70s hard rock bands, but really, isn't this style of music done to death a million billion times already?

But lets not get ahead of ourselves, because if you're into the ultra cheeseball high-pitch vocalists and epic soundscapes that preceded modern power metal bands - that is, if your musical horizon hasn't progressed since a few decades ago - then you may find something to like on "New Generation", because Auras aren't a decidedly horrible group. It's just that when you are shamelessly copying bands like Boston, Journey, Survivor, Kansas and Foreigner, or truly any other hard rock band from that era (it really doesn't matter which band you insert into that list because they all sound identical), it becomes hard to take you seriously in 2010. At least in my opinion.

However, it's impossible to deny the love and passion for this particular style on the record. From the emotionally wailed vocals to the faithful renditions of big-money semi-acoustic riffs and powerful soundscapes, everything about "New Generation" speaks for a bunch of guys who couldn't care less what your opinion of the music style is today, they just want to play it for their own sake, and if that sells some records and makes them rock stars in the process, then so be it. Which is a great attitude to have about your music, for sure. It's just that, do the rest of us really, seriously, honestly plan to listen to a 70s hard rock band in 2010 that isn't called one of the names mentioned earlier in this review?
