France to legalize P2P downloading?

France's Parliament has voted 30-28 for on a suggestion about a new copyright law, which aims to legalize downloading pirated copies of music, movies and software from P2P networks.

The new law-proposal suggests that roughly €2-5 of every internet connection bill in France will be taken to reimburse artists and copyright owners for the downloading that's taking place from French connections.

The French culture minister and all of the copyright organizations and record labels are heavily against the new law proposal, which will be voted on in early January. Should the law be passed, it would be a major victory for all P2P advocators across the world, as the case could be used as an argument in courts around the world.

This way everyone wins; the artists get compensated for their work, the consumers can check out new music legally before buying the CDs, and we avoid the idiotic court battles over piracy. Of course, the major labels would lose here but that's what we all want, isn't it?

The country's court's have previously ruled a decision which has made all copy-protection technologies illegal to use in the country.
