Mr. Death

Death Suits You EP

I'm surprised my fellow scribe EW didn't latch onto this on the instant it arrived in our mailbox, considering his constant appraisal of old school death metal. It doesn't get much more old school than Mr. Death, whose lineup includes members of old school DM heavy weights like Tiamat, Treblinka and Expulsion, and whose new EP "Death Suits You" sounds like a direct outtake of the early 90s Swedish death metal scene, complete with thick, buzzsaw guitars, tight rhythm department and brutal (albeit a little quiet in the mix) growls.

In the words of the band itself, "the music is straight forward, brutal old school death metal and played in the way we think death metal should be played and sound like". That is, take bands like Dismember, Entombed and so forth, absorb every detail from their puritanical school of thought in death metal, and apply it in modern production. The result is a no-frills old school guitar sound that's riff-driven but not necessarily technical as such. If that's your thing, "Death Suits You" is like a god-given gift to humanity. However, in the process of re-inventing the wheel in DM, they forgot that such an approach results in them sounding more or less just like their old school heroes, leading into a derivative sound that's only interesting to the genre purists, not those who have wished to move on since then.
