Beissert

The Pusher

One of the more difficult albums to describe or pigeonhole into a particular genre is the sophomore album by Germany's Beissert, "The Pusher". It's a groove metal album in its heart in the vein of Pantera and Down, but screamed vocals and strange clean vocal howls deviate from that basic platform quite a bit. Because for every badass groove riff present on the record, other intriguing elements such as nuances of hardcore and moshcore are mixed in seamlessly.

On top of all that, there's a great deal of variance on record both in terms of quality and sound. For instance, after two groovy and metallic tracks, "Die Fabelhafte Welt Der Agonie" surprises the listener as an all instrumental classical piano interlude, leading straight into the high-pitch guitar tones of "Saxon:Blood:Rock", thrashy riffs and very hardcore-oriented vocal grunts. Then the next track, "Uphillfight Against The Sun", jumps straight into classic rock when it comes to the bright instrumentals, but the vocals stay in the same territory causing a bit of a mismatch between the two. This is generally the problem across the whole album, especially with the clean vocals which rarely seem to fit together with the muscular groove in the guitars. All too often they seem like an annoyance than an enjoyable addition the band's sound, possibly because they are sung in a 'mildly' odd way.

I'm not saying there aren't any good tracks on the album, because then I'd be lying. The alternate rock piece "Durch Die Haare In Das Kind" has a pretty catchy (and poppy) chorus melody, and "Eerie Discipline" is also one of the tracks that'll stick to your head only after a couple of listens. But because of the large amount of different genres that have been thrown together, the record feels a little inconsistent and unfocused at times. As such, it's a challenge to describe just how Beissert really sound like, so you're best off by checking out the player below and making an informed decision whether or not you're going to like it.
