Lunacy Box

Lunacy Box

Sigh. Another gothic metal band effectively copying every single norm and tradition in the genre while trying to pass it as original through the use of a industrial vibe created through electronica elements in the mix. Could this be.... neon gothic metal? I can hear the captain shouting: "Quickly people!! Abandon the ship, ladies and children first!". But jokes aside, and lets try to be at least somewhat objective when dealing with Lunacy Box and their self-titled debut album, lead by Danish/Italian singer Ms Larsen.

Compare these guys to Within Temptation, Leaves Eyes, Lacuna Coil and other alternative rock based goth metal acts, and you'll find that they share pretty much everything in common with these guys, but especially the choruses which are particularly strong on a couple of tracks, with "Save" and "Wrong Lane" racing ahead of the rest of the tracks. But when it comes to good tracks, those are about the only ones worth mentioning on this record. There's a few decent ones but since I don't actually believe that gothic metal fans exist (other than Nightwish fans, but they're a far better band on every front), I just don't foresee anyone caring about this release at all. I might be somewhat cynical at the moment, but my opinion is only fortified by the god awful Filter cover "Hey Man Nice Shot" which now officially has been ruined forever in my mind. That song just wasn't meant to be converted into goth metal, seriously.

So while Lunacy Box's debut album is mostly average and unsurprising gothic metal, I'll still note the band's ability to write good choruses as a positive on the release. If everything else just wasn't so cliché, maybe they'd be onto something (though it could do without the anonymous electronic bits as well). It's only a debut album though, so I might've been a bit too harsh. But hey, every now and then a reviewer needs to vent out his frustrations at some genre.
