Nixa

The Brink EP

With plays on XFM and BBC 6 already, being the only unsigned band on the Freestyle Festival bill, plus a tour coming up with Brigade, it would be fair to say that the future looks bright for this London quartet. Sounding like an orgy involving Biffy Clyro, Foo Fighters, ridiculous amounts of energy and fun, it isn't exactly original, but when Nixa pull the alternative rock sound off outlandishly well, you'll be eager to overlook the lack of anything that breathtakingly innovative. Oh, and when you find out that they are unsigned, your jaw will hit the floor.

Though it is only three tracks long, Nixa demonstrate an impressive arsenal of skill, whether it be the guitars which range from indie-like chugging or the aggressive complexity that "33" boasts. In fact, just about every member of the band is as skilled as the next. The drumming is assured, and doesn't keep to being just 'safe', the vocals are powerful, but don't lack a softer edge for those quieter moments, and the bass doesn't for one second allow itself to be over-powered or over-shadowed by the guitars. The things you may usually associate with an unsigned band; the poor production quality, the lack of technical quality etc. don't for a second rear their ugly little heads here - it's all very, very professionally done.

Typically, I'm not a huge fan of this genre, but the reality is that Nixa have done nothing but engross me (and I get bored pathetically easily), testament to their ability. One day, soon, with the help of the right radio play, these guys will be sending shockwaves through the mainstream rock domain. You heard it here first.
