Dead Waters

Andrea Haugen, known under her artist name of Nebelhexë, is a recording artist, writer, artist and a fetish model according to Wikipedia, and her works are of a very spiritual and esoteric nature. After a quick listen to her new record "Dead Waters", the first thought in my mind was "You don't say?", and the second one was "This is just... weird". For the whole 41 minutes that the album lasts, Andrea sounds like a witch casting spells over minimalistic instrumentation with some campfire singing manifesting every now and then. The guitar consists mostly of simple plucking and the drumming is there solely to create a haunting atmosphere...if I didn't know better, I'd think I was reviewing a Blair Witch Project soundtrack.

I have honestly no idea how I'm supposed to rate this, to say I've been left speechless after the first active-listening session would be an understatement. The music is synth driven, pagan themed, and exceptionally strange. There's a sense of New Age (whatever that means, but I can tell it's there) to her music, as well as a teeeny-weeny bit of folk influence that pops its head forward every now and then in the midst of the mysticism and ambiance. But other than that... what the hell?
