Global Parasitic Leviathan

Mother Of All is a Danish progressive thrash/melodic death metal project by Martin Haumann, whose drumming credentials include bands like Timechild, Afsky, Myrkur, and Essence among others. Here, he has assumed singing and songwriting duties as well. The debut album three years ago was more of a solo record released as a collaboration between him and Steve Di Giorgio (Testament) on bass and Frederik Jensen on guitars. On "Global Parasitic Leviathan", he brings a full band into the fold for the first time, having recruited members from well-known bands like Lamentari, Chaoswavand Withering Surface.

Stylistically, the band takes their cues from early Metallica and Megadeth records and injects in a healthy dose of Gothenburg-style melodeath in the process. With a slower approach to the tightly shredded riffs, the record gets a progressive thrash vibe with occasional flashes of brilliance when the band embeds twin guitar leads into the mix. "Hypocrisy - Weaponized" is probably the best example of the latter, while "Debt Crush" surprises through black metallish melodies halfway through and "Pillars" is raucous in its thrashy melodic style.

The vocals are mostly barked in eerie early Hetfield style, but unfortunately, sound anonymous and nondescript throughout. With so much energy used on the technical percussion, there doesn't appear to be enough creativity left to vary the expression in this department. At the same time, the production is flat and lacking in crisp detail, reducing the impact of the solid riffage that guitarists Frederik Jensen and Henrik Rangstrup (Chaoswave, Endarken) otherwise display from time to time.

As a result, "Global Parasitic Leviathan" sounds about as you'd expect a fairly average thrash metal record to sound like. It's not terrible, nor is it particularly interesting either. The mix of melodeath and occasional death metal also means it has its moments, but as a whole, the record doesn't leave enough of an impression to stand out from the grey mass of Danish metal bands.
