Tightwire

Head Full Of Snakes

One of the most upbeat pop punk records of the year award has to go for Tightwire and their sophomore album "Head Full Of Snakes". It's been a while since we've heard an album as full of happy-go-lucky sing-alongs as this one, where every song is essentially an upbeat, pogo-pogo style pop punk cut with an irresistible chorus that both makes you smile and chant along simultaneously.

It's one of those light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek records that doesn't take itself seriously at all and is better for it. Think somewhere along the lines of Masked Intruder meets Pkew Pkew Pkew, Teenage Bottlerocket, and The Copyrights, and you're just about there for Tightwire's cheerful expression. It's basically no-frills pop punk done right: the guitars are incredibly tight, the production clean, and the sing-alongs infectious. Who can resist singing along to the "you make me wanna do / BAD THINGS" bits on "Bad Things", or the "tonight we're going to a party, tonight we're going to a show-oh." parts on "Party"?

Indeed, it's a party atmosphere throughout the record. It's one of those records you want to chug beers to and circle pit in a tiny basement venue where the crowd's all smiles. It's not trying to reinvent the wheel, rather than just producing one hell of a great wheel. And in terms of pop punk, this is exactly how you want the genre done: rowdy, and without taking itself all too seriously.
