Babyface

Sorry Mom is a femme punk rock trio from New York. Their debut album "Babyface" captures raw punk rock rebellion through minimalist punk melodies, a lo-fi production, and an overall DIY vibe that draws from the rawest Jeff Rosenstock material. It's an unpolished, aggressive take that's all over the place on the map when it comes to punk rock subgenres, ranging from garage punk through riot grrrl, hardcore punk, and no-frills pop punk in the process.

Take the first song, "Shaving My Legs", for instance. It's an off-tune piece of garage punk loaded with attitude in place of production. Yet it's immediately followed by aggressive shouting and screaming on "Hiccup" and the chaotic vibes on "Getting Sick", which resembles Jeff Rosenstock the most. Elsewhere, the slower ballad-esque tracks bring to mind Mixtapes and Tacocat, at least in terms of spirit.

Common to all of these is that the production is scheit. Sure, it accentuates their raw edges and coarse expression, but unfortunately, it leaves the record with an unfinished vibe. Underneath the mess, you can find gems like "Awesome Party, Reprise!", which stands out with its catchy riffs and upbeat pop punk vibe that's contrasted by a sense of anger lingering just underneath the surface. Imagine this with great production instead.

Overall, the Sorry Mom debut is a quirky little piece of rebellious punk rock. It's got the right attitude and some of the right pieces to be successful. But it desperately needs to improve its production value before it attracts other than the niché crowds.
