Unseen Faith

Prodigal Sons EP

Unseen Faith is a Danish metalcore/deathcore hybrid that's been garnering quite a bit of local buzz over the past couple of years. This is no doubt due to their crisp, modern production that delivers brutal deathcore with crystal clear metalcore nuance, and their vocalist Alexander Eriksen, whose range varies from guttural growls to thick hardcore barks and everything in between. Yeah, not your typical wraagh wraagh wraagh in monotone delivery, that's for sure.

"Prodigal Sons" is a four-track EP that follows their rather well-received full-length "Evoke". Here, they go all-in on atmospherics (think haunting keyboard melodies) and even throw in a few clean vocals here and there, such as when Mirza of Siamese features in a prominent role during "Deadly Potential" in a quintessentially Prime Collective-style high-flying chorus.

Most of the record is spent in ravaging growls, however, so deathcore fans need not fear any radical adjustments to their style. If anything, they will love the guitar compression during the monstrous, Nasty-style breakdowns that feature on both the title track as well as on "Hindsight". The latter, in particular, is a chaotic one that should produce a devastating pit in a live environment.

Elsewhere, the guitars are intricate and show technical prowess through swirling, evil melodies that borrow just enough from metalcore to open up their expression fully. Elements of death metal are subtly present on guttural material like "Love Hunger", albeit delivered through a deathcore lens.

Overall, "Prodigal Sons" is a solid EP that's not looking to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it produces four tracks of deathcore in international class with quality production throughout. If you're a fan of the genre, it has what you need, however, it is regrettably short at just fourteen minutes or so.
