Redeemon

Born from the Ashes of UK ska-metal outfit Beat The Red Light comes Redeemon, a heavy music and ska-punk mix featuring former members of Beat The Red Light, Voodoo Glow Skulls and Smokey Bastard. This self-titled EP has been a long time coming and highly anticipated within the ska-punk community since the band’s formation back in 2019.

Back in 2020, we received our first taster of recorded music from Redeemon in the form of “Anaphylactic”, a grooving riff-filled skacore style anthem with great headbanging hooks and Pook’s throat tearing shouts covering all the heavy influences. On the flip side, the ska-punk influences peek through with skank worthy segments, great pulsing horn rhythms, and wonderful singalong melodic elements. It’s a catchy, yet hard-hitting introduction to the ska-metal crew.

“Operation Burnout” is the perfect tone-setter, opening the EP with monstrous crunch guitars and ominously dark sounding horn melodies that in an intro that creates so much tension, it’s a punchy heavy start. The skacore style fast upstroke rhythms make you want to get the knees up, while the outro has brutal, neck destroying breakdowns. This heaviness continues even further with the more death metal-inspired “Pressure Switch”, with Pook switching to some more death style growls in the chorus. It’s another faster track with some wonderfully winding horn hooks that remind me of Stand Out Riot. “Finest Mistakes” is much more of a groover, with some strong Pantera style influences, or even post-2009 Lamb of God, the crunchy riffage is so bouncy and the harsh vocals carry a similarity to Phil Anselmo’s brute style, it’s a pure headbanger.

“Escapade” slows things down a little, but that’s more to be an epic closer for the EP, teasing some melodic plucking along with Pook unveiling some rare beautiful clean vocals that lead into more tension building horn hooks and crescendoing guitars. After a few minutes the heavy vibes kick in with pulsating brass melodies and pacey riffage, the chorus hook is so infectious. It’s an incredibly theatrical sounding track that showcases the growth in songwriting from writing tracks that you could either mosh or skank to. The intricate musicianship truly shines here.

The general consensus is that Redeemon is the same meat as Beat The Red Light, but different gravy, the core sound of metal meets ska-punk remains, and you can’t help but find the similarities. The main difference I can find is there is more room for big hooks, catchy melodies and singalongs. There is more room to let technical prowess unveil itself and it feels more experimental. Nevertheless, this is a solid listen for those select people that might enjoy both ska and metal. It’s heavy as hell but has some fun moments that make you want to dance, sing and shout along.
