Between The Richness

With members from hardcore legends Have Heart and cult post-hardcore band Basement, Fiddlehead certainly has a roster worth raising a few eyebrows for. Their sophomore album "Between The Richness" came out last month and is one guaranteed to bring back memories of Title Fight's 2012 masterpiece "Floral Green" as well as of course Basement's equivalent, but more dreamy counterpart from the same year, "Colourmeinkindness". It's namely formed from similar droning, dreamy post-hardcore ideals as those two records, with plenty of influence from indie-flavored alternative rock as well as quirky indie bands like Pavement (see: guitars in "Million Times") in one package.

We're dealing with an anthemic brand of dreamy post-hardcore that was all the rage about ten years back, and "Between The Richness" simply demonstrates that this type of shouted-out, yet pleasantly melodic soundscapes are not out of fashion just yet. It's effectively a cross between the aforementioned two albums, with a few playful notes here and there and less rooted in hardcore undertones than "Floral Green" was. Yet songs like "Get My Mind Right" would've felt right at home on either record, starting from the prolonged, scratchy shouts to the unpolished guitar distortion that encompasses their soundscape. Likewise, the quieter and more somber "Joyboy" feels like it belongs in the same club as "Head In The Ceiling Fan" given its soothing, yet simultaneously hardcore laced ambiance.

Its depth-laden, dark soundscapes feel introverted, yet lofty and spacious at the same time. This is the exact recipe of what made the Title Fight record so great, especially given vocalist Patrick Flynn's ability to switch between gravelly and clean brawls effortlessly. Yet this similarity is ultimately Fiddlehead's biggest weakness as well: it's positioning itself right next to genre masterpieces. While good in its own right, at least I can't help but think 'fuck me, the Title Fight record was so good' every time I go through "Between The Richness".
