Make Arcade Great Again

Krang is a European skate punk band originating from the Czech Republic whose soundscape primarily references the golden 90s era of punk rock throughout their third album "Make Arcade Great Again". We're deep in the No Use For A Name / Millencolin type of melodic skate punk world, delivered through a 2010s style pop punk lens. Expect melodies familiar to records like "Making Friends" channeled through an easygoing, no-frills pop punk lens of a band like Masked Intruder. In fact, "Food Song" effectively could've been a track on said band's album, and elsewhere undertones of The Ataris and Simple Plan are discernible.

Basically, it's the kind of band you might experience at either the now-defunct Groezrock or at Punk Rock Holiday playing the smallest stages. Decent, melodic skate punk meets pop punk that ticks just about all the right boxes, even throwing in a political bone here and there, yet it rarely comes across better than that. Tight guitars, lightning speed tempo, and emotive clean vocals only get you so far. Melancholic soundscapes recall a similar expression by Misconduct, where it's also clear punk rock classics have gone a long way influencing their sound, but the lack of convincing tracks that don't sound derivative or standard fare is missing. This is also the problem with "Make Arcade Great Again".

In the end, Krang delivers a decent slab of melodic punk rock. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, yet it's also not one that'll leave a particularly lasting impression on international audiences. Songs like "Marion Corbetti" and "Bird is Going Down" are highlights, but overall the 12 tracks leave behind an image of a record that sounds like you might expect from the genre, but without standing out.
