Really From

Boston-based Really From offers an intriguing take on avant-garde music on their self-titled, third album. Relying on classical piano, jazzy trumpets, casual permission, and minimalist math-rock - the band displays a style of explorative music that has more akin to abstract art than what most of their peers are busying themselves with. And that's all on just opening track "Apartment Song".

Through "Really From", the band utilizes instruments like flugelhorn, trombone, and synth bass aside from the aforementioned and the usual guitar, drums, and bass, creating a sense of wonderful experimentation that's accompanied by dueling baritone male/silky female vocals. Album highlight "Quirk" features soothing, light math-rock guitars that draw parallels to TTNG, and elsewhere, the jazz-laden trumpet expression recalls how The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die use the instrument in their soundscape.

The vocals have a distinct emotive vibe to them, resulting in a rather unique overall package that blends together avant-garde, math rock, jazz, and emo, all in varying measure. "I Live Here Now" is another great example where it almost feels like Tiny Moving Parts switched over to experimental jazz for a moment. It's an intricate expression that offers a challenging, but ultimately satisfying glimpse into the realm of art-rock. "Really From" is a record they should be proud of, but given its complex nature, it's one that probably requires more attention span than the collective scene has to offer, sadly.
