Nightmarathons

Missing Parts

Nightmarathons are a little known punk rock band from Pittsburgh, but that's about to change big time as the scene begins to discover their debut album "Missing Parts" en masse. It comprises exactly the sort of shout-along no-frills punk that makes FEST fans drool. Couple that with infectious riffs delivered with plenty of melodically-charged treble, lots of grit and raw edge to the production, small glitches, and spirited vocals, and you have a winner in your hands.

Basically, "Missing Parts" sources the best vibes and best sing-alongs from bands like Dillinger Four, Off With Their Heads, Banner Pilot, Iron Chic, and puts them together into one high-energy, shout-along package of basement punk for the ages. It carries all the same signs as early Red City Radio did: the soundscape is rough and unpolished but compensated by boatloads of attitude and a knack for writing melodically-infused riffs and insanely catchy choruses. From the coarse distortion and the multi-vocalist approach to the choruses, the first four songs on the record are an absolute bliss to listen through for any fan of the aforementioned punk rock bands. And best of all? The record doesn't even peak 'til much later.

With a high-energy approach combined with an uncanny ability to slow things down occasionally for variety, Nightmarathons take us through a textbook example of how brilliant this type of punk rock can be when it is done right. So many catchy and memorable choruses, raw guitar melodies, and perfect utilization of all three vocalists means the record is truly excellent front to back. How Nightmarathons have managed to escape unnoticed for the better part of the last year is incredible. "Missing Parts", eh? I don't hear any.
