Pass Away

The Hell I've Always Seen

So members of Crime In Stereo and I Am The Avalanche got together a few years ago to form a new band called Pass Away to explore a common love for The Replacements and 90s West Coast punk rock and out came a couple of EPs that sounded just like The Lawrence Arms. Which is a code word for awesome, for those not in the know. The debut album "The Hell I've Always Seen" follows suit and delivers a laid-back, Midwestern punk rock expression that sounds like it's the bastard child between the aforementioned Larry Arms and I Am The Avalanche.

Smoky, coarse vocals over smooth punk rock melodies that are polished only in the slightest to leave that buzzing, treble-charged sound to the guitars and the rough edges around the vocals. That's the name of the game here and the key formula in making a great Midwestern punk record. Head-bobbable, sing-alongable, festival-ready material. FEST, here we come, amirite? But all jokes aside, Pass Away deliver exactly what you would want from a Lawrence Arms record. It's easygoing and laid-back, made up of short songs that are barely over two minutes long, for the most part, each of them with a memorable sing-along and buzzing, melodic guitar lines that just bring the song home.

Nope, it isn't rocket science nor revolutionary in the genre by any means, but it doesn't have to be when you have songs like "Terrible Feelings", "Nola", "Bummer", "Totally Fucked" and "Minus The Care" on the album. They're simply quality Midwestern punk rock songs that balance between upbeat pop punk and a rawer side of no-frills punk rock in perfect fashion. Sometimes, that's all you gotta do to deliver a solid album.
