Space Zombies EP

Remember just a couple of months back we had the Sunrise Skater Kids album? It was essentially parody pop-punk created by popular YouTuber Jarrod Alonge. Well, it didn’t take long for him to get back into the studio to unleash more piss takes on genre stereotypes. Now we have Alonge’s fake metalcore act Amidst the Grave’s Demons with a five track EP named “Space Zombies”.

A lot of this is a hint to The Devil Wears Prada’s 2011 EP “Zombie”. "Uranus Infection", the amusingly named first track on this EP is even structurally similar to the “Zombie” opener “Escape”. The songs share the same form of intensity, brutal breakdowns and a mixture of savage screams and roars. The harsh vocals sound just like TDWP’s Mike Hranica. The main addition is Alonge’s best Jeremy Mckinnon impression in the chorus.

Alonge then continues that impression in the following track “Rewind to 2007”. The YouTuber is clever in targeting A Day to Remember’s 2007 album “For Those Who Have Heart". He goes right for the jugular in ripping off the intro riffs and vocal melodies in “Fast Forward to 2012”. You have to at least love the in-jokes. Like the title suggests, this song is also about nostalgia and the Warped Tour scene in 2007, mentioning bands like Alesana and Chiodos as well as Myspace. The song then goes into ripping off other key ADTR Segments from other songs. Most notably the big build up that should be Jeremy clearing his throat is just Alonge amusingly saying “d00d” before a massive breakdown.

“The Borders Don’t Trump” is an Architects influenced metalcore monster that sounds just like “Naysayer”. It has that same screeching guitar toned intro layered on top of an onslaught of earth shattering breakdowns and Sam Carter-esque shouts. Keeping the topic close to current affairs in American politics, this song about Donald Trump and the various ways he plans to make America “great” again. This is right up Architects' street with their political views.

The follow-up track, “Write The Science” ends up being more amusing the longer you listen to it. The topic is all about Scientology beliefs set to a song clearly influenced by For Today. For those that don’t know, the irony of this is that For Today are devout Christians who are incredibly open about their faith. Last up is an acoustic version of "The Swimmer", which featured as an Amidst the Grave’s Demons track on Alonge’s first album, “Beating A Dead Horse”. Nothing is truly special about this track and perhaps the only real down point of the EP.

The YouTuber continues to entertain with his parody antics and quite frankly I don’t want them to stop. The Sunrise Skater Kids album may have been a bit long, but four new entertaining metalcore tracks that take the almighty piss is the perfect amount to tickle the listener. What stands out is how clever the lyricism is in each song. Pushing the in-jokes to the extreme and poking fun at the artists the band is ripping off. Alonge’s fake hardcore band Chewed Up should be next with some straight up hardcore like Terror and The Ghost Inside.
