Denmark's answer to Brutal Truth, Piss Vortex, are just about ready to unleash the next chapter in their cacophonic and chaotic form of grindcore that we were introduced to on self-titled debut album in late 2014. The group, which features ex-The Psyke Project guitarist Christian Bonnesen, previously toyed with similar elements as Between The Buried And Me did during the early part of their career, but on "Future Cancer" EP they take yet another step further into the grindcore abyss.

With inspiration from bands like Brutal Truth, Pig Destroyer and Wormrot, Piss Vortex deliver an uncompromising, 100bpm beatdown of visceral grindcore that's definitely not for the faint of heart. Melody is a foreign concept as the band grind, twist, and pummel their way through six tracks in just under twelve minutes, staying true to all genre basic requirements from breakneck speed to insane technicality and an altogether brutal and unforgiving expression. The vocals, while monotonous, pierce all the way through to your core. The percussion is as chaotic as it is technically impressive, whilst the remaining instrumentals leave no doubt in the band's talent. But as with so much other grindcore, other than making devilish noise and displaying and ability to create lightning speed brutality in perfect synchronization with one another, the question that begs to be asked is, what is the point?

By descending further into the grindcore mold, the band are also losing the few characteristics that made them stick out from the crowd. With dozens and even hundreds of like-minded bands from Kill The Client to Phobia to Fuck To Facts to Murder Construct, Piss Vortex are dangerously close to sounding like yet another grindcore band without a clearly defined vision, which is the key aspect that set Napalm Death, Carcass and Brutal Truth apart from the rest of their peers. Closing track "Patterns Of Repetition" is the one instance on "Future Cancer" EP where Piss Vortex deviate from the textbook grindcore formula, here utilizing sinister ambiance to their advantage together with a noticeable tempo shift from breakneck speed to a slow atmospheric section. This, as opposed to minuscule alterations from breakneck speed to lightning speed, is what they need to do more if they are to stand out. But that being said, "Future Cancer" is still one of the most extreme releases you'll hear in Denmark this year, so fans of that definition should definitely check it out.
