Mud Shark

Lend Me Your Ears EP

Upholding the ideals of traditional alternative rock music, Århus-based Mud Shark released a highly Queens Of The Stone Age inspired EP "Bonzo Did It" two years ago. It was a decent record that also integrated strong flavors of stoner rock and grunge into its soundscape, thus presenting a 'defend rock music' type of sound that didn't go as retro as many of their national counterparts but rather focused on the late 90s sound of the genre. The same continues on new EP "Lend Me Your Ears", which again echoes "Rated R"-era QOTSA as its primary inspiration, but is now also bringing in elements from local colleagues in Disarray Son and Pet The Preacher as well.

If there was one problem that plagued the previous EP, it was that the songs were too anonymous to carry the release on their shoulders. The same applies here: the technical credentials are in order, but the songwriting leaves much to be desired for. The tracks roll forward with conventional stoner rock vibes that leave a sleazy, desert-y type of feeling behind, but at the same time lack recognizable riffs or vocal sections that'd leave the songs lingering at the back of your mind when you're done listening. Sure, the use of fuzz pedals on a track like "Face Of Sin" is a nice tribute towards the likes of Kyuss or even Fu Manchu, but when the vocalist lacks a charismatic delivery, you won't remember much afterwards. The flailing songwriting is a recurring problem throughout the EP that in the end prevents Mud Shark from gaining popularity past their friends and relatives for the time being. The groovy guitars and muscular vocal croons have simply been done much better by other bands than is the case here.
