Learn Forget Repeat

Here's a rather interesting outfit from New Orleans. All People, as they are called, are about to release a record in a few weeks' time that should appeal to all fans of indie-flavored post-hardcore written with the 90s interpretation of the style in mind. That is, think pioneering bands like Fugazi and At The Drive-In, or better yet, newer yet still seminal cult bands like Bear Vs Shark, whose albums "Right Now, You're In The Best Of Hands" and "Terrorhawk" were landmark releases on Equal Vision records in 2003 and 2005, respectively, prior to their untimely stoppage as a band in 2005.

"Learn Forget Repeat" follows a similarly quirky and experimental approach to post-hardcore, displaying clever usage of unconventional rhythm patterns and vocal melodies that seem oh-so-calm at first but then explode out of nowhere at unpredictable moments. In the process, many songs are catchy albeit weirdly so, as songs like "Consume", "Alienate" and "Conversations" will prove. There's even some funky saxophone in the midst of the instrumental piece "LITWOP", which underlines just how odd many of the songs by All People are. However, despite not following normal songwriting ideals, they are never too weird for their own good. The band maintain a great sense of what is a good melody and how to blend punk and indie rock into their post-hardcore platform in a manner that feels both seamless and intriguing at the same time. They certainly don't let the listener off the hook easily; their expression is as challenging as it is different and unique in 2015, which is a key part of their appeal. The metaphorical envelope is being pushed in all directions throughout the 12 tracks on the record, where the band weigh in equal measures of punk, indie, post-hardcore, and even hardcore in places to arrive at a sound that's difficult to pigeonhole into just one style.

Much like Fugazi and At The Drive-In before them, All People don't consider their genre as a limited, well-rounded rectangle they must find themselves in. Instead, they choose the way of experimentation, resulting in many playful tunes that sound like nothing else you'll hear in 2015. That, if anything, has to be applauded.
