All In My Head EP

Following last year's debut album on Mutant League Records, "Hoser", the Canadian pop-punk group Seaway is coming back at the scene already, now signed to Pure Noise and primed to build their momentum with a new EP called "All In My Head". The band sits at a happy medium between the glossy pop-punk known to the mainstream and the slightly more fuzzy-edged stuff lauded in the "Defend Pop Punk" movement of the underground, so you can expect ever so slightly strained vocals, chunky rhythm guitar, poppy leads and lyrics that are the kind of sappy you shouldn't take too seriously - Sort of like a cross between Man Overboard and Simple Plan.

The EP opens with "Your Best Friend", which is clearly the single of the bunch and serves well to spearhead the release. The melodic hook of "Don't you come crying now, 'cuz your best friend's my girlfriend" is the kind of poppy thing that strikes you as stupid, yet has you singing along anyway, and the music itself also plays on this confusion, sounding halfway like wallowing emo and halfway like pop music that's just for fun. Of the remaining three tracks, "The Let Down" is the better one, featuring some fast-paced verse work and generally showcasing some of the sugary vocal work that seems borrowed directly from vintage New Found Glory material.

Overall, "All In My Head" is exactly what you'd expect: A very by-the-book pop-punk release from a band that's just moved up to a bigger label and started to clean up their sound for wider consumption. Its best quality is the double-nature of its poppiness and emo sappiness, and its best song is clearly the opener, making it feel more like a single with a couple of bonus tracks included than a proper EP. That said, any traces of amateurism have been efficiently shaved off Seaway's expression, and while fans of "Hoser" may wonder if some of the energy and underground charm has gone lost along the way, the EP on its own is a solid and easily enjoyable spark of fun.
