Bent Life

Full Skull

American hardcore quintet Bent Life released their first full length album earlier this year. Actually, the album consists of two previously released EPs from the band: A self-titlet EP from 2012 and the EP “Full Skull” from 2013, which are now available together in Europe under the name “Full Skull”. For people who have not had the experience of listening to the band before, this is a good opportunity.

Bent Life play brutal old-school hardcore without fancy effects or gimmicks. This is uncompromising hardcore that could be mistaken for coming straight out of New York, if it was not for the fact that the band is from the Midwest, more specifically Lincoln, Nebraska. Bent Life play with passion and an unbridled energy that exudes from every song on the album. At times, the tightness of the band could be a little better, but there is a very raw, almost live vibe to the album, and so it is not that important. The production is unpolished and fits well with the band’s old-school approach to song writing. The songs are built around fast riffs and pummelling drums accompanied by vocalist Andy Voorhees’ aggressive scream. This man screams with a seldom heard passion and rage that is a huge part of the appeal of the music.

This is an album that will make your head nod and the blood flow faster through your veins. It is an injection of raw hardcore energy that will be perfect for working out at the gym or going crazy to at a live show. This is not an original or innovative album by any means, but it does not need to be. While listening to the album, I can image the band being awesome on stage in a small and intimate venue. They will be on a tour of Europe later this year, but sadly this does not include Scandinavia. Hopefully we get to experience them here another time soon, if they are half as good live as on record, then people are in for a good time.
