You'll Live

Lost. Forgotten. Abandoned. Buried EP

Dog Knights Productions has been one of the labels lately spearheading the original screamo movement, which has thus far primarily consisted of European bands exploring powerviolence and the more aggressive and hardcore punk based interpretation of the genre. Across the pond, you have the Geoff Rickley-led United Nations of course doing the same thing, and all the 'wave'-style post-hardcore bands. But I haven't yet come across a band like You'll Live from Florida, whose EP "Lost. Forgotten. Abandoned. Buried" (titled after the four songs on the record) offers yet another angle on screamo revival.

Here, it's all about tranquillity, ambience building, and soft melodies instead of the drenched-in-passion type of aggressive soundscapes this genre tends to present. We're talking considerable influence from post-rock, but also from math rock with complex, light guitars providing a bright and rich instrumental landscape. This is used as a solid compare/contrast platform for their vocalist's raw, slightly lo-fi tuned screams, which aren't as piercing as is usually the case in the genre, but the restraints works well here, because this EP is generally much slower in its tempo as well.

It's an interesting approach because it leaves the screamo genre completely exposed. The melodies are positive and uplifting, which is basically the opposite of what you're used to hearing from other bands. Even envy aren't as light in their soundscape as You'll Live, who could be compared to Castevet in terms of their instrumentals. Either way, the four track EP offers immense promise, even if it's not quite enough to determine if they have what it takes for a full-length.
