Prom Night Fist Fight

We Have Your Queen EP

Prom Night Fist Fight has been a band a few members of the editorial staff here in Rockfreaks.net have been following very closely. Not because they are specifically great right now, but because of the immense amount of potential their early demos have shown, and thus we have attempted to review everything from their unreleased demo EP's to official releases such as this EP "We Have Your Queen". And much has improved since "In Response To" demo a couple of months ago, which was plagued by lack of direction and attempts of trying to be overly creative and genre-defining. Perhaps the band had a read of our review, or perhaps they just finally reached an agreement over their sound, but "We Have Your Queen EP" has the sound of a band that is beginning to figure out what they want to do with themselves.

The five tracks on the EP all have vampiric screaming that occasionally treaches into the growl territory. Songs like "Scuba Diving In Mommy's Laundry" are ridiculously titled, but have some of the most immense breakdowns you have experienced since I Killed The Prom Queen. The band has gotten rid of their dance and emo influences and has begun to focus purely on screamo influenced hardcore - the riffs oscillate in an industrial manner not too distant from Norma Jean, and the beatdowns and breakdowns put the listener in his place straight away. But that isn't to say the band has entirely abandoned their metalcore influences as the new recording of "Small Horns" (now called "Small Horns To Ward Off Predators") demonstrates. There are some scale-based riffs instead of the hammering breakdowns in place here, and though the vocalist still engages in vampiric screams, the song has a much more As I Lay Dying feel to it than the rest.

In my previous review I criticised the band for lack of direction and originality. "We Have Your Queen EP" figures out their direction and the songs don't sound like rip offs from I Killed The Prom Queen anymore. That's not to say we have a new world-class act in our hands here by any means, but more so than "In Response To", this EP demonstrates their immense amount of talent that rather sooner than later will blossom into an album teasing the upper 8 to 9 ratings.
