From Hell

Heresy EP

Writing a record that's deemed worthy of comparison to the almighty Converge is difficult, yet From Hell seem to have accomplished just that on their seven track EP "Heresy". They play the same sort of erratic, blackened hardcore that's packed with raw intensity and unadulterated aggression. It's a fully uncompromising expression that races forward using d-beat rhythms as a take-no-hostages style groundwork for one of the most menacing screams/growls you'll hear outside a Jacob Bannon record, a style that's definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Aside from the relentless and dark cacophony of hardcore/metal mixture, there are almost moments of subtle melody and/or tranquillity embedded within the chaos. These enable a great contrast, thus making the brutalized sections sound even crazier than they otherwise might do. "Nemesis Of Neglect" opens us with just one such section. But despite the glorification of chaos hardcore as a genre that takes place throughout "Heresy", there's a red thread present throughout the record, one where the riffs are distinct and organic in their nature, and feel oh so Converge-esque in their rich texture and brooding distortion. Though a little too similar in places, it also means From Hell have struck gold with their songwriting and can freight train their way through the record safely without ever sounding too noisy or too blackened for their own good. This is how to sound menacing and sound fantastic at the same time.
