Rocket Citizen

Soundscape EP

Rocket Citizen are an alternative rock quartet from Ringsted, Denmark, who have just released their debut EP "Soundscape" earlier this summer. They immediately separate themselves from the vast majority of their peers in the country by avoiding the standard sleaze rock / rock'n'roll / retro rock style that seems to never die around here. Instead, Rocket Citizen draw from grunge, post-grunge, and alternative rock for their groovy riffs and smooth bass-driven soundscapes. This is absolutely a good thing and something the band needs to keep doing going forward.

While the title track is a quieter ballad that resembles Nirvana's softest material, rest of the material relies on crunchy riffs, slightly proggy vibes and 90s style atmosphere. This is especially present on "No More", that has a little bit too much attitude given its rap rock tendencies to start out with, despite having a good chorus. The vocals, while not fantastic at this point, are delivered with enough character to help carry a convincing sound, and the guitars aren't afraid to break out to solos that occasionally reference the 80s as well.

If that sounds a little confusing to you overall, that's because it is. Rocket Citizen showcase on "Soundscape" that they have decent songwriting skills, but they still need to work on their identity a little more before they'll make the headlines. For a debut EP this is a well-produced and well-executed first effort, so let's see what we get when the experience of this EP settles into their songwriting capacity.
