Vietcong Pornsurfers

We Spread Diseases

Let's address the elephant in the room straight away: Vietcong Pornsurfers is a retardedly bad name for a band. It's over-the-top, cheesy, and pretty lame to be honest, guaranteed to be a turnoff amongst any other crowd than the sleaze/glam rock one. Which I guess is mostly the target audience the quartet from Falun, Sweden are aiming for anyway. Their sophomore album "We Spread Diseases" is best described as Motörhead meets old school punk rock - think Iggy & The Stooges and stuff like that - where pure attitude and spirit replace any interest in topical songwriting to suit the decade, even the century that we're living on.

But technically that's all fine and dandy, as long as the band keep writing solid songs. They're cocky, rowdy, and out-of-control, and when you couple that type of rock'n'roll with punk undertones and a healthy amount of delusional ego ("This song is the best song in the uuuuniverse" lyrics on "Best Song"), sometimes you do get surprising results. Indeed, "We Spread Diseases" is actually a pretty fun listen, thanks to the catchy riffs and rowdy choruses that capture your attention on at least a couple of songs. The aforementioned "The Best Song" is one of them, but opener "Marcel"'s uptempo approach and the brash, Motörhead style riffing and vocals of "Make You Hate" carry a certain charm as well.

Although originality is obviously thrown out the window with a release like this one, the good news is that Vietcong Pornsurfers have it in them to write reasonably good rock'n'roll tracks about half of the time. They're better than their name initially suggests, that's for sure.
