No Water To Wine

Taxit is a Danish five-piece hailing from the town of Skive. They have existed for a couple of years but this is their first full-length album. I first heard their music at an explosive gig about a month ago and since that was a pretty good experience I decided to check the record out, which by the way is downloadable for free on their website.

Taxit play what you might call energetic, straight-forward rock with the occasional catchy chorus. Vocalist Anders Heegaard has an interesting voice at times but on the album it's mostly wrapped up in effects or slightly over-produced which makes it sound weirdly distant instead of more raw as it does live. A more silent song like "Road" stands out in that his voice is way more present but this nakedness also makes it evident that Heegaard could use more nuance and feeling in his singing as it doesn't quite live up to the space given to it here.

This critique is also applicable to the general sound on "No Water To Wine" as it lacks some edge and feeling to compliment the energy that is definitely present throughout the album. Examples like "Remember" which has some cool guitar work in the verses, the danceable but hard-rocking "Die As Humans" which has a super catchy sing-a-long chorus and "Time Is Here Now" with its cool high-pitched yells are all solid songs but not much more than that. Rhythmically the album is well-founded and driven by a groovy pulse (especially on slower songs like "Attitude of Plastic" or "Land of Mediocrity") and the guitars dance along for some cool melodies but the band seems to never go beyond a solid standard rock sound and that makes a full-length album a little boring to listen to when there's nothing more happening musically.

So Taxit's "No Water To Wine" showcases a band that clearly knows how to rock out but needs some attitude to stand out. With that being said I am inclined to say that their sound is way better live than on record so by all means go catch them at one of their shows if you're into danceable, straight up rock.
