With a name like Snow White's Poison Bite and an album title like "Featuring: Dr. Gruesome & Gruesome Gory Horror Show", you'll betcha I'm intrigued. After hearing the intro track "Gruesomely Introducing: Dr. Gruesome And The Gruesome Gory Horror Show", even more so. It's a windy night and foreboding footsteps can be heard on the background. A creaky door opens to gloomy church organs playing music that's a mixture between rockabilly and horror movie soundtracks, before a monstrous voice appears:

"Greetings horror crew. And welcome to the gruesome gory horror show. You've come here to witness the terrifying second chapter of Snow White's Poison Bite. You are interested to enter the mind of a mad scientist who will slowly suck your brain. So let me introduce you to your host for tonight: Dr. Gruesome.

Dramatic guitars and symphonies ensue alongside horrifying laughter, before a high-pitched scream "Good evening everybody, I am Dr. Gruesome." arrives, as we are introduced to the main character in the band. From here onwards, the record establishes the band as a very well executed concept much like Black Veil Brides, except this band isn't as much about image as it is about delivering a musical translation of the Rocky Horror Show through a platform that borrows a great deal from horror punk. Think AFI's old material fused with Aiden, and you're pretty much there. This being their second release and the whole horror/zombie/etc themes being so in at the moment, they've already gathered a huge fan base, and with that comes the haters, as the band acknowledges on "There's A New Creep On The Block". The song starts with a defiant "Hello haters, hello friends. It's me, different me, I'm back again. All my haters, all my friends, I'm back for my revenge", which is sure to irk people off even more, especially because it is almost irritatingly catchy in its delivery. In general, the band's vocals will definitely take some time in getting used to, because they consist of annoying croons that are purposefully horror-themed, plus the band's insane melodies are weird and odd to say the least.

And here's the thing: it's easy to hate something like this because it is so trendy. But at the same time I can't say I've heard anything like this on record before. If you took the entire concept of US style Halloween and translated that into a single record with songs about meeting corpses in the graveyard and going trick and treating amongst monsters, then this is it (although the band are from Finland). This is then seamlessly combined with the gory horror show theme that runs throughout the album into one of the weirdest and most annoying albums I've heard in a while. Albums are seldom annoying: they are either good, average, bad, or awful. But when a record decidedly annoys you, it's doing something right. It's annoying to like this type of preposterously trendy music, because beneath its thematic you actually find solid horror rock. I think this one needs to be heard to be understood, because no words can describe the gory horror show well enough.
