Nothing Real Is Left EP

Swing Hero is the solo-project of Marshall Gallagher, a multi-talented musician previously of the post-hardcore band Solar Bear and now a touring guitarist in 3OH3. "Nothing Real Is Left" is his second self-released EP, and it's a quirky mix of emo, alternative and pop music.

Stylistically, "Nothing Real Is Left" is difficult to place. Though there are only five songs, they each display a different influence of his - from the post-rock-inspired opener "Dead White Girls", to the dirty, alternative of "Feeding Frenzy" and "Obsidian Seas", to "The Emptiness of You" which combines all of the above - with a yearning pop-rock sensibility in the vocals and lyrics throughout. However, despite casting a wide net and Marshall clearly being a talented musician, the results are varied. Marshall tries his hand at many different styles, but he doesn't necessarily nail any of them. The heavier efforts "Feeding Frenzy" and "Obsidian Seas", in particular, fall short as they lack the urgency and energy required to make the more aggressive efforts convincing.

However, at each end of the album we have the spacious post-rock and emo/indie efforts of "Dead White Girls" and "The Emptiness of You", undeniably more solid and the melodies slightly more memorable. Ultimately, though, "Nothing Real Is Left" shows Marshall has the talent but perhaps lacks the focus and direction for this to be a release worth anything more than a passing interest.
