Road To Horizon

Chapters EP

Road To Horizon are a band from West Yorkshire, England who have actually been around since 2009 but, due to setbacks and line up changes, are only now releasing their first... well, anything. They've already toured with the likes of Funeral for a Friend, Rise To Remain, Hildamay and Attack Attack!, have even been featured on a 'metal special' of BBC's Three's TV show "Don't Tell The Bride", and they come armed with an admirable mantra of 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger'.

They will need that resilience and fighting spirit, because the "Chapters" sounds very much like how you would expect a debut to sound and, therefore, Road To Horizon still have a long way to go. There's nothing obviously wrong with it; it's just a very typical six song slice of emocore/melodic hardcore, right down to the "Pop Goes Punk"-esque cover of Rita Ora's "R.I.P.". Everything is here to appeal to fans of Funeral for a Friend, Bury Tomorrow and Yashin: there are moments of quiet to balance the loud, technical, metallic guitar passages to balance chugging breakdowns and melodic clean vocals to balance the harsh, throaty screaming. Cuts like the love-lorn "Through Ashes" and "In Your Bed" have hooks strong enough to show the band's potential, but the transitions in the more spacious efforts "Caught Red Handed" and "This Is The End" feel somewhat forced and the melodies in the slower moments are a bit flat, reminding us of this band's rough edges.

Ultimately, while there isn't much wrong out of place on "Chapters", Road To Horizon will need to improve if they are to stand out in a crowded genre. The musicianship, vocals and song-writing are all okay, which is about as good as you could hope for them to be on their first release, but that's still not enough to make this EP especially memorable. At the moment, "Chapters" is exclusively one for the emocore/melodic hardcore die-hards.
