Prins Carl

New Order

Prins Carl used to be called Buccaneers in the past, so you may have heard of them since they've been playing across Scandinavia since 2001. The story does not tell the reason for the name change to Prins Carl, but this Västerås, Sweden bunch is hellbent on playing Oi! / street punk charged with old school ideas, rollicking rhythms, and a distinct pub punk feel that has always surrounded bands like Cock Sparrer, Cockney Rejects, and others like them.

It's rough around the edges (especially in the vocal department), but still nicely melodic and has a thick bass line in a prominent role throughout "New Order". On occasion they strike gold, such as on "...Of Today", which rolls forward at first at a nice pace, but then delivers a very, very catchy vocal melody backed with faint gang shouts, one of the better ones I've heard from the Oi! scene in a while. Unfortunately, these moments don't come frequently enough on the record, so you're stuck with dime-a-dozen Oi! punk for the majority of the time. Then there's the vocals, which will be a love/hate contention for most listeners, given how they basically sound like they're delivered by a drunken football hooligan most of the time. It's part of the Oi! / street punk charm, but it's going to be a turn off for some. Try with "...Of Today", and if you still don't like it, you might want to give this record a miss.

If I am to highlight one particular detail about the album, it is the bass guitar. Even though it follows the guitars rather slavishly most of the time, it does take a few liberties to add to the melody-base with some high-range notes and playful sections here and there. "Wonderful World" is a great example. Otherwise, the record's a fun, decent oi! record, but not causing headaches to the elite bands in this genre.
