Dog is Dead

All Our Favourite Songs

Dog is Dead is a five piece orchestra from Nottingham. Recently the band has experienced a lot of hype when their “Glockenspiel Song” was featured on the popular British TV show, Skins. They’ve released 3 EP’s, but “All Our Favourite Stories” is their first studio album.

Unfortunately Dog is Dead don’t utilize the 10 tracks to show us different sides of their works. Most of the songs are very alike in tempi, expression and style. Overall the soundscape is characterized by a choir-song, folkish sound with the stereotypical abuse of the hi-hat. If you think Dog is Dead will bring something new to the genre, you’re dead wrong. It’s more of the same. It’s great for those who want that, but depressing for those of us looking for creativity.

The album does have some great songs in their own right. Dog is Dead may be generic for the genre, but they therefore also rule it. “Glockenspiel Song” is actually one of the less generic song with a catchy refrain “Oh this town, it's so electric/Since I got the feeling I can't shut down”. Also “Talk Through the Night” is a great track with a lot of promise.

However the band still lacks the personality they had on the previous EP’s. The song “River Jordan” has gone from something very interesting to something completely flattened and emasculated. Many of the songs could’ve been better if they’d not gone through a producer’s refining and commercialization process. The “indie” is slowly becoming quite the opposite of it’s original starting point.
