Leo & The Lineup

Leo And The Lineup are a relatively new entrant to the Danish music scene. They're a ten-piece out of Copenhagen who basically follow in the footsteps of fellow Copenhageners Babylove & The Van Dangos in creating ultra chilled, laid back ska/reggae in the vein of the bigger bands in the genre, such as The Aggrolites, The Slackers, and so forth. Not even a hint of punk is present in the soundscape - in its place we have soul and Jamaican-flavored musicianship that's as perfect mood music as they come.

Their self-titled debut album is a surprisingly authentic and convincing ska record, no doubt partially thanks to Babylove & The Van Dangos whose horn section is featured as a part of the band. Elements of rocksteady and two tone (think The Specials) are also in abundance. The songs are summery and upbeat without being fast, relying on relaxed vibes and danceable grooves, so it's a perfect record to pop on when you have friends over for a couple of beers, or when you're struggling through an intense hangover on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The songs are catchy, but not decidedly poppy per se, which means they blend in nicely as background music and permeate the mood of the entire room, but at the same time lend themselves well for an active-listening session.

"Leo & The Lineup" is a mature and well-written album for a band debuting to the scene. The horns are smooth, the ska riffs are quality, and the singing fits in well with the whole ska/reggae theme. Copenhagen isn't a big city, but based on this release, I'm sure we can find place for another band in the annual Ska Convention.
