Beyond Betrayal

Money Can't Save You Now EP

And the nomination for the most retarded breakdown in 2012 goes to...BEYOND BETRAYAL from the UK. They've just put out their sophomore EP " Money Can't Save You Now", which has made its way to my review pile, and it's actually in many ways a decent piece of brutal metalcore with low-range, almost black metallish shrieks for vocals and dynamic riffs a la Parkway Drive driving the songs forward. But in just as many ways it's a mediocre release, highlighted by the aforementioned breakdown on "Scott's Got A Time Machine (He Told Me Tomorrow)". It starts with a faint gang shout of something along the lines of 'you all can just suck my...' and explodes into thirty straight seconds of repeating the exact same chord in slow, presumably 'brutal' passage while the vocalist shrieks 'DICK' in a guttural manner. You thought Asking Alexandria's "OH MY GOD" breakdown was stupid? Wait till you hear this one.

Luckily for Beyond Betrayal, they do show moments of instrumental prowess and understanding of how to piece together an actual song. There's plenty of slick riffs delivered at high tempos, and lengthy passages where breakdowns are avoided altogether... but on the flip side, they don't do enough in this department to avoid sounding like generic knock offs of much bigger bands. When they succeed, they write songs like "November", which have melodic leads, and a varied tempo in the vocals that recall the best material from Parkway Drive and even Darkest Hour at times, but for the most part it's a bad case of 'oh, where have I heard this one before' throughout the EP. That doesn't make it a bad effort necessarily, it just lacks ambition and innovation. More identity next time, please.
