Make Me Famous

It's Now Or Never

It's so easy to hate bands like Make Me Famous as a critic in the first place, but it's even easier when literally everything about the band suggests that every single trend has been hugged in order to maximize impact in their target demographic of teenagers worldwide discovering heavy music for the first time. Their closest compatriots sound wise read infamous bands like Asking Alexandria, I Set My Friends On Fire, and Attack Attack!, while even their band name openly states their ambition as a band: screw the song or intellectual depth, as long as we get a bunch of 16-year-old pussy at the end of every show. Jesus Christ.

The song titles include literary gems like "This Song Is Blacker Than Blackmetal", "Once You Killed A Cow, You Gotta Make A Burger" and the classy "Ifyuocnaraedtihsmkaemeasnadwich", which should tell you everything you need to know about Make Me Famous. In case it doesn't, let me spell it out for you: prepare for the most trendy, lowest common denominator type of electronically infused, synth supported post-hardcore where the art of the riff has been completely lost on its creators who would much rather just chug away at one-chord sequences for the duration of the entire song if it wasn't for the overtly predictable autotuned clean chorus abruptly breaking the flow chugchug of the song. Imagine pseudo-brutal one chord disasters, triggered drums, deathcore style cookie monster growls and standard Asking Alexandria style screams, and contrast these with the dance beats, pitch-corrected, albeit infectious choruses and all the rage, and you have Make Me Famous.

Apparently these guys were originally from Ukraine, but after releasing just four songs in social media they received such overwhelming backing from US teenagers virally that Sumerian Records had them relocated overseas to be closer to their market. Sounds familiar? That's because it's exactly what happened with I Set My Friends On Fire during the Myspace years, and so similar idiocy is predictably found on "It's Now Or Never" as well. Now, I'll be quick to admit to being a sucker for the mega catchy chorus melodies on these type of albums and generally hating the complete absence of artistic integrity far less than I probably should, so all criticism laid aside Make Me Famous have some maddeningly catchy material every now and then: "Make It Precious", "We Know It's Real", and "This Song Is Blacker Than Blackmetal" all belong in that category, despite their utter inability of stringing together two choruses without a staggering display of how bad songwriters they actually are in between. What makes teens love these bands is their over-usage of infectiously catchy choruses and dance beats, which in its own right can be good as long as you admit it for being what it is - pop music - but it's just too bad these guys don't know how to write the metalcore passages even if their life depended on it. If you belong to the target audience, then this is probably TOTALLY AWESOME OMG THIS REVIEW SUX!!!! TOTALLY THE BEST BAND EVARRR!!!111. The rest of you know what to do.
