The Weight Of The World EP

The stock of Switzerland's Cancer has been experiencing an upswing lately as fans from all around the world are checking out just who is this curious bunch of guys that function as the backing band for Mike Herrera's Mxpx during his Mxpx All Stars excursions in Europe. They've been promoted in all of Herrera's interviews as of late, so naturally we felt like we ought to tell you if they're something you should be checking out as well. "The Weight Of The World" EP is the follow-up to their debut album, and one where they've seen a slight shift from their slightly amateurish debut album towards a more professionally produced, and slightly different sound.

Although I'm not too familiar with their early output, I did check out "I Felt Hope" from the first album, which has been re-recorded here. The change is clear: the band now sounds cleaner and better, with hints of bands like No Use For A Name and of course Mxpx in the mix, so we're venturing deep into the melodic punk / melodicore territory with a strong leaning on the late 90s feel of the genre. The songs are pretty catchy, with "Dying Fairytale" taking down the prize of being the best song on the record, and the melodies are good, but never amazing. Throughout the EP you feel like you're listening to classic 90s melodic punk all the way - such as the Millencolin sounding "The Glory So Far" - which is good, but it never has the chance to eclipse your memories of the better bands in the genre from that era. So instead, "The Weight Of The World" sounds like a nostalgic tribute to those bands instead of something that'll populate the best-of lists of numerous magazines at the end of the year.

That doesn't mean it's a bad record by any means, just that it's a decent punk record which comes with few surprises. Mike Herrera's influence has made them a better band, now all there's left to do is to maximize the choruses of songs like "Shooting Star" to make them feel more impactful and to give them more longevity. Lets see how they progress on their next full length.
