We're Not Worthy

Hit The Ground Running EP

Hailing from Leicester, UK, We're Not Worthy are the latest band trying to cash in on the popularity of the pop-hardcore style in recent years. Dubbed 'easycore' in certain circles, they pretty much utilize every single trend in the genre from the heavy breakdowns and gang shouts through Motion City Soundtrack esque keyboards and pop punk hooks. Basically, they do everything the fan's of the genre require from its biggest bands to do, but the problem is, they don't do it particularly well on their debut EP "Hit The Ground Running".

Now, it's never a nice thing to start slashing a band's first output, but there are a number of things We're Not Worthy need to do before they can be considered among their more accomplished peers. First of all, they are playing pop-hardcore but the breakdowns aren't heavy enough, which is okay, but the on the flip side the pop punk choruses aren't catchy enough either. There are bands doing both the heavy and the soft style much better than We're Not Worthy Here. "Make Mine A Double" is a song in the right direction, but the band seldom write choruses that stick with the listener, or bouncy verse sections which call for pit activity in an instant.

On first listen, "Hit The Ground Running" EP indeed sounds like a worthy addition to the pop-hardcore genre. But then you pop on discs by Handguns, Same As Sunday or Tag Your Targets, all bands in the same place on their career as We're Not Worthy, and realize their EPs are just a little bit better in comparison. Comparing to whom I consider the best band in the genre, With The Punches, is completely out of the question at this point in time. Lets see if their next record can muster a more memorable approach to the genre.
