Absence Of Light

Dublin, Ireland based Xerosun introduce themselves to the world with their debut album "Absence Of Light" - and with a sound we aren't accustomed to hearing anymore in 2011/12. Whilst not completely nu-metal, their sound toys enough with the dead genre to raise a few eyebrows in the crowd section named after relevancy, but luckily produce a sound just different and original enough to avoid sounding dated.

Influence and elements from bands such as Coal Chamber, Mushroomhead, Dry Kill Logic, and especially Static-X and Drowning Pool can all be heard throughout "Absence Of Light", which can perhaps best be characterized as a metal-sounding version of "S.C.I.E.N.C.E" era Incubus with an added touch of Drowning Pool style nu-metal for good measure. Take a track like "Broken", for instance, where the guitar effects underline why I've mentioned Drowning Pool three times now in this review. Calling it a "Sinner"-era track is not out-of-place at all.

So basically, "Absence Of Light" deals with that late 90s / early 2000s type of heavy sound, one that uses plenty of effect-laden guitars for added heavy/industrial feel (think Static-X here), and vocals that are yelled/sung in a way that could conceivably be compared to "Load/ReLoad" era James Hetfield. But all the comparisons aside, Xerosun aren't just a clone band lacking of originality. They bring in a modern metal sound, kind of like an update to the dated nu-metal sound, which makes it sound reasonable in this day and age. They are also competent in songwriting, as evident in the memorable choruses like on album highlight "In My Mind". The nu-metal references will be enough to turn away most of today's young music fans, but those of us who grew up in the middle of the movement will look at "Absence Of Light" as a good reminder of why the genre was such a big deal to teenagers and young adults alike back then.
