King Lizard

Viva La Decadence

Now it is time for a King Lizard review which has been delayed far too long. Frankly, I've had a hard time writing this review since it occurred to me that my actual interest in this musical genre is very small. King Lizard is a rock'n'roll band from London, and "Viva La Decadence" is their debut album, which obviously strives to sound like something in the same direction as Guns'N'Roses.

Their sound consists of guitar riffs that are pretty straight forward and strong, which provides a lot of energy to the songs, along with the long and bragging solos that appear throughout the album. Bass and drums have a groovy rhythm and sound, and the production is tight. There is no doubt that they are very competent musicians, but the album lacks originality. The singer has high pitched screams which sound like a slightly overdone version of Axl Rose's vocals. The lyrics are made of pure impertinence, with a big "fuck you" stamped in the forehead; being cheesy and cocky are the keywords to this album. That combined almost makes it sound like a modern and louder version of Mötley Crüe.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure this band has fans for exactly that reason. It might have something to do with me valuing the old school bands too much, but this album does not reach out to me. It seems like they try too much; overdone would be my short but exact description of this album. That said, it can not be overseen that King Lizard delivers a decent piece of work, and deserves a listen if you are into the rock'n'roll or glam genre.
