The Revolt Of Darwin

The Revolt Of Darwin

Together with Helhorse and Charlie Brown, The Revolt of Darwin are currently one of only three Danish bands with a taste for blending hardcore and blues in the vein of stateside establishments like Cancer Bats and Every Time I Die. Perhaps the northern climate and expensive bourbon offer an explanation - Denmark simply lacks the ingredients. But just as scorpions and exotic spiders sometimes wind up on its shores and manage to adapt and survive, so has The Revolt of Darwin defied the odds and persevered, largely, methinks, by way of the band's explosive live performances.

Trouble is, they never manage to fully replicate that prowess on record. This self-titled offering is packed with punk attitude, filthy groove and unpredictable energy, but even so it lacks the urgency and immediacy of the live setting. Assessing an album based on how it sounds live and how it sounds on record, however, hardly makes a just review, so such comparisons will be left alone from this point on. Instead, let us first concentrate on its strengths, one of which is without question the intensity. The Revolt of Darwin have an uncanny ability to compress all the fury of hardcore, attitude of punk, and swagger of blues, into short biting barn burners like "Whiskey Guns" and "Dance though the Ashes of Sin".

But while the tracks do work on an individual basis, it is almost impossible to distinguish between them. The Revolt of Darwin are a band with little regard for critics though, and their shameless and fun-loving approach to writing and playing music has a certain irressistible charm. It's simple, pure and instantly catchy, but on the flipside, forget originality and broken boundaries - this is energetic, punk rocking hardcore from the heart. No more, no less.
