Furze

Reaper Subconscious Guide

As well as having atrocious artwork that's impossible to view properly unless bathed in sunshine and/or every light bulb turned on in your apartment, Furze (not to be confused with the satanic black metal band on Candlelight) are frankly an awful band that has no place in neither this decade nor the one before. You see, in an attempt to clone the classic Black Sabbath sound from the early 70s on their new record "Reaper Subconscious Guide", the band forgot a few essential things: one, 70s style stoner/doom metal is completely irrelevant in 2010/11 despite the groovy guitars on offer, and two, they lack the pioneering qualities that their obvious idols (the record is dedicated to the '70-75 era of the band) had.

So yeah, prepare for five songs of Black Sabbath worship with a healthy dose of stoner-esque groove in the guitars, and horrible, horrible semi-clean vocals that occasionally appear ruining the little chance Furze ever had leaving a positive impression on this writer. A chance, which is ruined from the get go by some seriously questionable lo-fi production that shouldn't be acceptable today from any band, no matter how obscure and avant-garde. Speaking of the latter, Furze try their hardest at creating some sort of psychedelic avant-garde expression of doom, stoner and black metal, that is very clear, but it's just not very effective. It simply leaves the listener asking the question "why did this need to be released?"
