Derek Sherinian

Blood Of The Snake

Derek Sherinian is the former keyboardist in Dream Theater, and has been involved in bands like Alice Cooper Band and as well as Kiss, giving great credentials for him and his fifth solo project "Blood Of The Snake". Derek has collected a bunch of big names in the world of rock to feature on the compilation. His former band-mate John Petrucci from Dream Theater, Tony Franklin on bass, Yngwie Malmsteen on guitar, Simon Phillips at the drums, Brian Tichy on drums as well and Zakk Wylde on guitar and on vocals in one song. On top of that, there are prominent guest stars such as Billy Idol on vocals and our favorite hard rock gutarist Slash. Derek himself is, without much surprise, on the keyboards.

John Petrucci takes care of the guitar work on the opening track "Czar Of Steel". Between him and Derek's keyboard the song is builds up and morphoses into a huge inferno of jamming, which describes the content of the album perfectly. It is purely instrumental with the exception of two songs, and there are some confusing, yet still awesome, jamming sessions leaving the overall point of the album cloudy.

Zakk Wylde's voice on "Man With No Name" is slightly different from what we are used to hear from him. It's almost identical with Ozzy's and here and there he also sounds like Axl Rose. Zakk also sings roughly half of the song, and the rest is solos from Derek - it's simply awesome. Hopefully there will be more songs like this one included on his next album.

If you love progressive instrumental parts, you have to check this one out. You will nod your head along to fastpaced songs like "The Monsoon" while you'll also enjoy relaxing and leaning back in your chair when "On The Moon" subtly dwells you into a lullaby on the background.
