Vince Neil

Tattoos & Tequila

Each time I hear the title track to Vince Neil's "Tattoos & Tequila", I have to double check I'm not listening to a Stone Temple Pilots record. It's so similar in both guitar- and vocal tone that I was ready to spend the rest of the review commenting on how you should be listening to the original band instead of a cheeky cover band. Luckily for Vince Neil, however, they integrate a healthy dose of classic 70s/80s hard rock into the mix to distinguish themselves for the rest of the album in the form of covers of infamous hard rock anthems (the title track and "Another Bad Day" being the only two original tracks here).

But one thing's for sure, Vince Neil knows how to kick ass, probably as a result of his Mötley Crüe background. "Tattoos & Tequila" consists entirely of easily accessible, tongue-in-cheek hard rock classics where the band rocks out with their cocks out and plays with badass, authentic attitude. The best part about it is that they pull it off to near-perfection, unlike the hundreds of other 80s revivalist bands doing covers of these sorts of tracks. Again, being in Mötley Crüe probably helps a lot. Highlights include the ridiculously entertaining "Ac/Dc" (Sweet) which ought to get your feet tapping and head banging from the first note, the obligatory hard rock interpretation of "Viva Las Vegas" (Elvis Presley), the rowdy Sex Pistols track "No Feelings", Cheap Trick's "I'm A Whore" and many more.

Basically, if you're into classic 70s bands and want to hear them covered by someone in Mötley Crüe, that is, to inject an unhealthy amount of booze and rock'n'roll authenticity into the originals, then "Tattoos & Tequila" should find it's way to your dinner plate - or to your party playlist. Aerosmith, Scorpions, ZZ Top, Elton John are all covered here... need I say more?
