Misery Index

Discordia

Relapse's roster is one of the most versatile you'll find on a record label. Their music ranges from all-instrumental jazz jammers through straight forward metalcore acts to extreme metal acts like Misery Index. Their latest full length album "Discordia" is once again filled with rattling guitars, roaring vocal work and unmelodious grindcore where the metallic guitars swirl up and down low-end scales at the speed of light.

Most reviews around the web are praising "Discordia" to the heavens, and I can't quite see why. There is little room to distinguish between any of the tracks on the album. This alone drags my interest away from "Discordia", but the unvarying vocal work and the constant blast beat domination just seems pointless to me. Ironically enough, the band shines on the title track "Discordia", where the band pauses their manic tearing-your-ears-apart sound and presents an entirely different Misery Index - one that's paintakingly slow, using cleverly placed drum passages, feedback and deadly growled vocals in well-thought out timings. It's funny how oftentimes bands destroy albums by placing one slow track in the midst of nine fast ones, but here we are witnessing the opposite. Misery Index should stick to the slower extreme-metal style, as that's clearly what they are the best at.

I'm not going to follow the trend and give this album a high mark. Why should I, when it doesn't deserve one? This isn't by any means a terrible album, it's just very, very average unmelodious grindcore that doesn't come anywhere near the likes of Nile and Suffocation.
