Rovers Ahead

Subversive Sessions EP

"Oi! Cheers! Oi! Cheers!" are the opening lyrics of Rovers Ahead's demo EP "Subversive Sessions", bringing the cheerful, pint-obsessed folk sounds of Ireland to your home stereo. The song's called "One Mad Night At The Pub" and it's about getting hammered at a pub, and it has one message and one message only to its listener: bring out your dancing shoes, as those folksy violins and Celtic punk riffs rival Flogging Molly's fun-meter and aren't about to let you get away from locking your arms with the fellows at the pub for some good ol' Irish dancing. Copenhagen has been needing a punk band this fun for a long while, so it's about time Ireland has landed ashore over here, too.

There are only two other tracks on the record. "Went Out To Get A Drink (But Ended Up In Jail)" is a bright folk punker with plenty of violin and tons of references to a whole bunch of bands you should all be familiar with; at least Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, The Tossers and Street Dogs are paid tribute here, and it's the good kind of tribute where the band actually knows what the heck they're doing. Sometimes you don't want your songs to be about anything more complicated than a simple story of how you once got so drunk you got put into jail, and that's precisely the attitude to music that Rovers Ahead realize on this EP. It's no-frills, hilariously enjoyable, at times infectious Irish folk punk in the vein of the big boys in the genre. No reason to miss out on this as there's just no way this stuff won't be a blast live. Even the ballad, "Make Me A Saint", wins the listener over through its charming pint-drenched vocal delivery and mandolin/accordion combo.

What better way to start May 1st celebrations than to give a few spins to "Subversive Sessions".
