Realscapes

We don't get a whole lot of submissions from the Spanish music scene, in fact probably the least out of all Western European music scenes. Thus we don't know much about the scene over there, but the few bands that have crossed paths with us have generally been rather enjoyable and devoid of genre clichés. Opeth-sounding Nahemah are a great example, and now Vigo-based In.Verno uphold that trend with their surprisingly decent take on gothic metal, "Realscapes".

That "Realscapes" sounds far more interesting than all the Lunacy Boxes of this world put together ultimately comes down to their list of influences, which mentions bands such as Moonspell, Amorphis, Opeth, Lacuna Coil, and Dark Tranquillity. So although the band's female vocalist does fit all the characteristics of a typical gothic metal singer, albeit with notably good and melodic pipes for a change (think Epica, Within Temptation), the band overall integrates distinct progressive undertones to their music, best seen in tracks like "Living In Vain", "Strength", "Unmask" and the 11 minute album closer "Confession". Occasionally you'll even hear a lightly symphonic passage faded to the background as a supplement to the instrumentals. Now this doesn't necessarily mean that the band has anything in common with any of the names listed before except for Lacuna Coil, but it gives you an idea that In.Verno aren't a direct copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a insert infinite recursion like 95% of releases in the genre have been for the better part of the last decade or so.

And for that In.Verno must be commended. However, the band still has some way to go before they'll truly be able to battle evenly against the heavyweights in the genre. The album works best during the three-part saga "Weakess", "Doubt" and "Strength" in my opinion, but you'll still have to be a hardcore fan of the gothic genre before you'll fully embrace these tracks, despite their lean on progressive rock. Next time send us the promo sheet in English!
