Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?

The Arctic Monkeys received nothing but incredible reviews of their debut album "Whatever People Say I Am, That What I'm Not". I must admit that I found that album quite boring after a handful of listens, but yet they it's still an okay album. Only THREE months after their debut, they are here with a new EP: Some will say that this is a commercial suicide. But you might feel the irony in the title track, where the lyrics prominently state "Don´t care if it's marketing suicide, we won´t crack or compromise".

The EP starts out with a very promising bass-line in "The View From The Afternoon" but that ear-pleasing lasts for only eight seconds. Suddenly it stops, and the characteristic Sheffield accent of Alex Turner ruins the great opening. Not that he is a bad vocalist, it just doesn´t make any sense to stop that great opening!

To my great disappointment, the opener is one of the best songs on the EP. "No Buses" and "Despair In The Departure Lounge" fall through. Two songs so incredibly soothing and slow that they don´t fit into danceable, rather funky picture of Arctic Monkeys. "Cigarette Smoker Fiona" and "Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys" are good Arctic Monkeys songs though, and especially the title track has a really chilled sound that suits the Monkeys perfectly, and already is one of my favorite songs from them.

I have to do some conclusions from all this. Three out of five songs are quite good, but that is just not enough. I can´t see the purpose of making this EP. Maybe because they really do not want to be that popular or trendy, and they want to create something they love instead of creating music for the masses? If so, cool with me. But the quality of the songs should (and can) be remarkably better next time.
