Something Delicious

No Fun Intended

Osama, is that you? "No Fun Intended" by Something Delicious effectively sounds like someone placed a bomb into a box containing every musical genre imaginable, which then exploded in a room and consequently splattered pieces of each genre into disfigured shapes on the walls all around. There's jazz, there's punk, there's hardcore, there's metal, there's pop. There are trumpets, saxophones, keyboards, funky bass-lines, and pretty much anything else you could think of aside from a full scale symphonic orchestra. Sounds weird? That's because it is.

The first couple of times you listen to "No Fun Intended", chances are you'll be laughing out loud at the pure strangeness of sound and their (pathetic) attempts of poking fun at various subjects. For instance, there's a jazzy track which contains a sample of the Batman theme (from the old series), which after a short while leads into an imitation of Van Halen's "Hot For A Teacher". Here's where I'm thinking: Is this meant to be a joke? If that's the case, the novelty wears off freaking quickly. It may be funny and weird once, maybe twice, but after that it begins to be just lame; about equally as lame as my opening joke of the review.

Afterward, it's easy to arrive at the conclusion that Something Delicious are merely disguising their utter randomness and mediocre songwriting as experimentalist music. But I've got news for you: experimental music can also be hilarious and great for extended periods of time instead of just a couple of listens. HORSE The Band, Heavy Heavy Low Low, among others, have both demonstrated this nicely. As it stands now, I'm yet to make it past the 6th song ("Pirate Zombies")on this 8 track record - this is a brilliant example that original does not always equal good.
